In 1978 the land that the Playing Field sits on was sold by Sir John Lowther to 4 Trustees for use of the village. In 1981 the trustees transferred the ownership to the Official Custodian of Charities at the Charities Commission on behalf of the Guilsborough Playing Field Association (GPFA). This enabled the land to be held by statute on behalf of the GPFA and protected for use by Guilsborough villagers.
How the name of Guilsborough Playing Field was agreed is lost in time, but the use as a Playing Field is what was intended in the original conveyance, as team sports were listed as the primary purpose for the Field. This purpose has been retained over the years with the field hosting football, cricket, bowls and other recreational sports.
Whilst the field is intended as a facility for the benefit of all villagers, it is not a public space that is open and accessible to the public but is private and those wishing to use the Field do so with the agreement of the GPFA. The facilities are managed by volunteers who raise around £12,000 annually for fixed costs from people using the Field and from fundraising events.
